Don't Blame Me - James Marriott
Don't Blame Me is released as the third and final single from James Marriott's debut album 'Are We There Yet?' which is releasing on November 10th, as announced at the end of the Don't Blame Me music video. The Don't Blame Me music video (which you can watch here) was directed and edited by James himself with cinematography from both Owen Rogers and Ribena Ballerina.
Don't Blame Me was first debuted at a live show in hometown venue 'Patterns' that James and bandmates Jono Suter, Jago Shakoori, Sam Horsely, Matt Gavin and Lou Salanson played ahead of their debut Reading and Leeds Festival appearance. It is said that the band were only going to play this once at their show at Patterns but enjoyed playing it and seeing the crowds reaction so much that it became a permanent addition to their setlist. This remained true through the bands first international appearances in Australia earlier this month.
This song rings true to James' indie rock sound that previous EP 'Bitter Tongues' showcased. James has said this song is rather critical towards himself. From reading through the lyrics, it appears to be about a relationship that wasn't healthy and perhaps felt a bit one sided. It's suggested that his partner wasn't interested in being with him anymore so he 'cut all ties'. It sounds as though deep down he knew the relationship wasn't going to workout so he tells his ex "don't act surprised, its only for you' showing that he was aware of what his partner wanted and stuck to their wishes no matter how much it would hurt him to do.
The bridge of this song is where we hear the line that seems to be a bit of a fan favourite. "We were never in love, so when we were fucking who were you thinking of?" The whole bridge really showcases the exact emotion that James has about his situation. Saying that he is "already sick of the next mountain top" and that "this high couldn't last" further highlights the fact that James could feel his relationship breaking down.
Don't Blame Me is James' first song to reach an editorial playlist on Spotify after hitting 15,000+ pre-saves for this song and having a lot of fans talking about it everywhere!
